Two Welsh Englynion (Epigrams)
Dau Englyn
Michael Collins
Gwelodd fwledi’r gelyn – a’u hosgoi
Ar y sgwâr yn Nulyn,
Ond daeth un fwled wedyn
O blith ei bobol ei hun.

Michael Collins
He saw the bullets of the enemy – and evaded them
On the square in Dublin,
But one bullet came along later
From amongst his own.
Y Fam Teresa
Rhannodd drallod y tlodion – yn eu byd,
Rhannodd boen y cleifion;
Rhoddi help oedd mawredd hon
 golud euraid calon.

Mother Teresa
She shared the distress of the poor – in their lives,
She shared the pain of the sick;
Giving help was her greatness
With the golden riches of the heart.
These ‘englynion’ appeared in the May/June 1998 edition of the Welsh language poetry
magazine, Barddas. We are grateful to the Editor, Alan Llwyd, for permission to reprint them in Welsh and in English.
