AN NOLLAIG – CHRISTMAS

“This carol has been specially written by Simon MacHale, a Lay Clerk in Christ Church cathedral Choir.”

“Féile íontach faoi ghlaise do chuilinn
A wonderful festival beneath the green of the holly
Aontaíonn tír i ndraíocht:
The land unites in enchantment
Fleánna is téadaí binn
Celebrations and the sweet harp-strings
Amhail is i mBeithil dúinn le féachaint ghrinn
As if in Bethlehem we were to look closely
Ar an Dia Naofa in a éadaí lín.
At the Holy God in his linen clothes.”

“Text in Welsh by / téacs sa Bhreatnais le Hedd Wyn
translated by / aistrithe le Barry Tobin.”

Tagann an téacs seo thuas ón chlár don
Féile Naoi Léacht agus Carúil
ag Ardeaglais Chríost, Baile Átha Cliath, ar an Luan 18 Nollaig 2006.

The above text is from the programme for
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, at 8.00 pm on Monday 18 December 2006.

************

Cónaíonn Simon MacHale i mBaile Átha Cliath ach taistealaíonn sé go rialta go dtí a áit dhúchais, Cathair Chorcaí, mar a bhfuil sé in a léachtóir sa Roinn Ceoil i gColáiste na hOllscoile Chorcaí.
Is a leaganacha suntasacha fileata féin iad an téacs sa Ghaeilge maraon leis an téacs idirlínithe sa Bhéarla de na leaganacha níos dílse ach maol ón Bhreatnais bhunaigh le Barry Tobin.

Simon MacHale lives in Dublin but regularly commutes to his native Cork City where he lectures in the Department of Music at University College Cork.
The text in Irish, which he set to music especially for the event, as well as the interlined text in English are his own strikingly poetic versions of the more faithful but spare translations from the Welsh original by Barry Tobin.
